Scared
Dear Frankie,
My mom and I live alone. She has been sick for a couple of months and had to go to hospital three times in the middle of the night in an ambulance.
Before the ambulance arrived, she would try to reach a friend and ask if they would come and get me. But she wasn’t always successful.
One time, a neighbor saw the ambulance and took me to her house; another time, I was left alone all night; the third time, a friend answered the phone and immediately came over.
But I never know where I will be staying or for how long. Worse yet, what will happen to me if she is too sick to return from the hospital and I never see her again? Besides having a broken heart, where will I go?

Dear Rags,
I suspect your mother has a plan if she becomes too ill to care for you. She seems like a very responsible person. In the middle of a medical crisis, what is the first thing she thinks about after calling the ambulance? Finding someone to take care of you.
You need to stop fretting and share your concerns with her. If she hasn’t made any arrangements for your future care, this would be the time for you to state what you would like to happen. Part of your conversation should also be about your mom’s health.
Maybe this is just a tough medical time for her; months from now, she will return to her old self. You won’t know until you ask.
