Hetty’s Children

August 23, 2023 by Staff Writer

In 1916 when New Bedford’s Hetty Green passed, she left between $10 million and $200 million (in today’s money: $27 billion to $57 billion). The frugal Mrs. Green left her money equally to her son, Ned, and daughter, Sylvia. How did they handle the wealth and what amount remains today?

Those questions will be answered at the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, 33 William St., at 1 p.m. on Sun., 8/27. All of the New Bedford National park presentations welcome everyone, and all programs are free from admission fees.

Dr. Irene Duprey-Gutierrez, a 26-year park volunteer and retired local teacher, will continue relaying Hetty’s life. The last Mrs. Green talk for the 2023 summer series, Hetty Trivia Time, will occur on Sept. 30.

Audience members may win Hetty famous nickels, the coin she gave to local children on their birthdays hoping she would encourage them to be frugal and save.
