To complement and enhance New Bedford Art Museum’s summer exhibitions on glass works (Contemporary Glass Sculpture by leading and emerging Massachusetts artists & Barcelona Sea Glass and the Art Photography of Celia Pearson) the Museum will screen Werner Herzog’s stunning early work, HEART OF GLASS (94 min), Mon., 8/7, 6 p.m. Tickets: $5, at https://newbedfordart.org/monday-movies/
Winner of Best Cinematography at the German Film Awards, Werner Herzog’s film tells the story of a small town in Germany whose residents go to great lengths to recover the lost secrets to making ruby glass.
Herzog placed his entire cast in a hypnotic trance state for this fable of a herdsman’s visions of the future and a village going insane after its glass factory loses the formula for its fabulous, much-prized ruby glass.
Forever the innovator, Werner Herzog famously had the entire cast of this film genuinely hypnotized so he could create a unique and dreamlike feature. His plan worked; HEART OF GLASS is truly unlike any other cinematic experience, a singular standout even among Herzog’s stunning filmography.
Glassmaking scenes were filmed in Erwin Eisch’s glass factory.
“As bizarre as it is mesmerizing, New Bedford Film Society founder, Mocha J Herrup, PhD, will present and lead our post film discussions.
