The Fairhaven Tree Department and students from Fairhaven High School teamed up to plant two Okame Cherry trees on Arbor Day, 4/28/23, in Veterans Memorial Park across from the High School. Students in Biology and Marine Biology helped get the trees planted, and each received a paw paw tree seedling from Eversource.’
Fairhaven Tree Warden Don Collasius told the students that they were there to celebrate trees on Arbor Day, but it takes people to do that. He said Arbor Day started in 1872 and grew, “like trees.” After World War I, people planted trees as in remembrance of those who gave everything.
“It’s the sacrifice of those lost and those before them and after that provide us this opportunity to be here to celebrate in a free country,” said Mr. Collasius. “We just planted two cherry trees in our Veterans Memorial Park.”

He thanked veterans and, those who were there and those who would get to hear the presentation.
“Thank you to this great group of young adults who are not only our true future, but are planting one, as well,” said Mr. Collasius.
He also thanked Eversource for donating the trees.
Fairhaven Town Administrator Angie Lopes Ellison, and Select Board chairperson Leon Correy, and Veterans Agent Brad Fish also spoke.
The event was recorded by Fairhaven’s Cable TV department and will be available on FairhavenTV.com under “Community Media.”
