Where is the accountability for Clarence Thomas?
And here we have another startling example of the double standard applied to a prominent official who has ostensibly crossed the line for years. Not a peep from the ethic meister Jim Jordan or the outraged Kevin McCarthy. Thus far there has been no Republican call for an investigative committee to delve into the allegations piling up against Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
Probably the least verbally assertive, or inquisitive during substantial issues before the Supreme Court, Thomas has more influence on American lives than any one senator or representative .
A man who stands in judgment of the behavior or standards of millions of Americans should not continue to render such enormous influence.
Pleading ignorance of how being lavished with expensive vacations from a friend would be considered unethical, or seemingly a conflict of interest, is not an acceptable defense from a person who is at the top of the judicial system. And should he profess an error in not reporting gains from a house sale that excuse will not suffice as well.
That the alleged involvement of his wife Ginny Thomas in very questionable political affiliations and actions has not provoked a hue and cry is understandable as a spouse should not be held accountable for the other’s conduct. And perhaps the same could be said about the children of elected or appointed officials.
Perhaps it is naive to be surprised or outraged by the deafening silence of so many legislators and media personalities who rush to pounce upon every misdeed of those they wish to remove from power and choose to ignore blatantly violative behavior from those they consider allies who promote their agenda.
As the three branches of American government are compromised and voters cynically withdraw from voting participation the result will be a victory for those who thirst for money, prestige, privilege and power and democracy will no longer be an impediment to their desires.
