This year marks a century in which the Lagoda, the world’s largest ship model, has been wowing visitors from around the world at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. On November 19, from 10 am to 2 pm, the Museum will be celebrating the centennial of the dedication of the Bourne Building, which was specially built to house the Lagoda, with a boat-load of free, family-friendly activities. Admission to the Museum is free all day. In addition to crafts, an inflatable whale tunnel, a green screen, and special activities in the Casa dos Botes Discovery Center, the day will include:
• 10 am: All Aboard the Lagoda Dress as your favorite crew member and take an imaginary whaling voyage on the Lagoda! Experience the chase, learn the ropes, encounter foreign cultures and learn about whaling in New Bedford through role playing. Meet at the Lagoda.
• 11 am Re-enactment of the original Bourne Building Dedication featuring Our Sisters’ School students and New Bedford Whaling Museum High School Apprentices. Bourne Building main stairs.
• 11:45 pm Happy Birthday Lagoda Cake in Jacobs Family Gallery
• Noon: Venture below deck on the Lagoda, the world’s largest ship model, in Bourne Building.
• 12:30 pm Join a “Nantucket Sleigh Ride” with a docent and discover the art of a Yankee Whale Hunt in Pursuit to Preservation.
• 1 p.m. Highlights Tour Docent-led, 45-60 minute highlights tour of the Museum. Tour leaves from the front desk.
