Well, the American voters have spoken. Donald J. Trump will be president of the United States of America. Surprise, surprise: They picked the man instead of the woman.
I was hopeful that we would choose the path to continued progress, more hopeful than I’ve ever been. But, honestly, I don’t know how I could’ve let myself get so hopeful in the first place. I knew it was a longshot all along.
This is not an unusual trajectory. We should not be surprised that we got slapped and put back in our “place,” back where we belong. That happens when certain groups get “uppity.”
And, damn, women got uppity this time around, didn’t we?
And, while we’re at it, let’s put those other “others” in their places, too: LGBT people, immigrants, snobby college graduates, liberal elites. They all had taken a few steps forward, time to stop them in their tracks.
Mission accomplished.
The social causes of justice and equality have been stopped by the majority, or, at least, by the plurality of the votes cast, or the majority of electoral votes, anyway.
That’s how it works: A few steps forward, then smacked down; a few more steps forward, then smacked down.
We just have to keep fighting, that’s how those few steps forward get made.
I do have one hope, though: He can’t possibly be as bad as he seems, can he?
At least pot passed. It’ll make it easier to get through the next four years. (See page 10.)
Remember, folks, the best revenge is still living well.
We have lots of good stuff for you this week. The Selectboard voted to update the aquaculture fees (see page 4), and to support the banning of certain mind altering drugs from being sold in town (not pot, though… haha). Acushnet hired a new Town Administrator (page 16). That’s big news.
I also went to the monthly meeting of the Disabled American Veterans in New Bedford. Now, there’s a group of guys, I’ll tell ya. They have spirited meetings, and take care of a lot of business, too. They are also looking for some young blood and volunteers to help veterans fill out forms and navigate the federal government bureaucracy to get the benefits they earned. Info is in the article on page 7.
Speaking of Veterans, the parade is tomorrow (see page 3). That’s right, tomorrow. So, if you’re someone who picks up this paper on Fridays, I hope you got last week’s issue.
In any case, you’ll have to be a bit of an early bird. Parade steps off at 9 sharp.
And, one last thing…it’s that time of year when all the holiday stuff starts kicking in. See the Happenings pages on 5, 8, 9 for all that as it gets going. Note on page 8 that my church, OLOP, is having its annual bazaar with all kinds of great Lebanese food. This is home-cooked stuff, folks, so, it’s a once-a-year event. Don’t miss it.
