Fairhaven’s household hazardous waste day saw 292 cars take advantage of the opportunity to properly dispose of old paints, gas, oil, and other dangerous chemicals.
Brian Pawlowic of MXI, the company that sorted and disposed of the materials, said they collected a lot of paint this year, both oil-based an latex. They also collected flammable materials, oil, antifreeze, and other chemicals that are difficult for residents to dispose of properly.
“It’s a very important service for the environment,” said Mr. Pawlowic. “This is the right way to recycle household hazardous waste.”
He said they package like materials together to make it easier to recycle or repurpose in the most responsible way.
Nothing unusual popped up this year. It was mostly the expected materials: harsh chemicals and flammable liquids.
If you missed your chance to get rid of old chemicals for free, contact the Board of Public Works, 508-979-4030, to make arrangements.
