What’s with the paw?
Dear Frankie,
My Dad taught me to give my paw when it was requested. But, I never understood the reason nor why when I did give my paw, it was such a big deal.
I watched the humans and noticed they gave their paws when they were introduced to someone new or greeting or saying goodbye to a friend. But none of these reasons applied in my case.
Primarily, my parents and human siblings ask for my paw. We know one another, so we don’t need to be introduced. They also never shake my paw when they come home or leave. So, what’s with them and the paw?
Ricky
Dear Ricky,
When your family extends their paw, or what they call a hand, to another human, it is for all the reasons you gave. No one is pulling the wool over your eyes.
As for a reason they ask for your paw, it is to show what clever dog trainers they are and what a canine genius you are. Paw giving is a dog trick, such as being asked to stand on your back legs and dance or roll over. I think your time would be better spent bringing in the mail or cleaning up the crumbs on the couch in front of the TV.
From what I can gather from your letter, asking for your paw doesn’t seem to be a daily event. So, if it makes them happy, why not humor them? It might even be worthy of a treat now and then.
Best, Frankie
