Educational Glories of Gargoyles?
In “Fairhaven High School Tours” (Neighb News 6/9/22 issue), the FNN says that Fairhaven High School was designed to “instill in Fairhaven students a sense of the glories associated with learning.” This includes, the article goes on, “carved wooden gargoyles.”
I’m a bit confused here. Precisely and exactly just what educational glories are students expected to associate with gargoyles? The Church used them to symbolize pain and suffering. Is there a subtle message that I’m missing?
As a New Bedford High School grad, I’m mighty disappointed to lack this association. We had no gargoyles, if, of course, one excludes the gruesome photo of a decapitated man posted by the driving ed instructor. I still see it in my sleep when I have pizza before going to bed.
