Colin “Jack” Jackson
May 18, 2022
Colin “Jack” Jackson of Fairhaven, MA passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, after a short battle with cancer. He was the widower of Margaret “Peggy” Jackson to whom he was wed for 63 years.
Born in Sutton, MA he attended Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational School where he was a star athlete excelling in both basketball and track, receiving many awards and accolades. He was inducted in the NB Voke Basketball Hall of Fame in October 2003, a very proud moment for him, his family and friends.
He served in the US Army and was sent to Germany. He often spoke of playing basketball in Germany during the quiet times, yet he also was surrounded by German troops after doing a surveillance check.
He was the owner of Jackson’s Variety which he purchased in December 1967. It was the oldest variety store in Massachusetts until a fire destroyed the business and his home in February 2020.
Everyone can remember Jackson’s Variety in many ways….. penny candy for generations of children, a school bus stop to catch up with friends, or picking up some milk and bread and paying for it whenever you could. Most will remember him as the gentle giant behind the counter or sitting on the porch with his daughter Tina, who later took over the store.
“Jack” loved coaching his sons and all their friends. He coached pee-wee, little, and pony leagues in both baseball and football as his sons grew. He was a favorite in the neighborhood, whenever the ice cream truck came jingling by he would buy ice cream for everyone! Pool parties with friends and family was a summer tradition! And he loved playing golf and cards.
He vacationed every year with the love of his life, Peggy. They would drive to Florida and stay for over a month, spending the mornings walking the beach, lying in the sun, having amazing meals, and basically just having a great relaxing time together. He was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Fairhaven.
He is survived by his son Randy Jackson and his wife Karen of New Bedford, his daughter Colleen Jackson and her fiancé Mark Andrews of New Bedford, his daughter Tina Jackson and her husband Phil Lawrence of Fairhaven, his sister-in-law Pauline Jackson of Maryland, his sister-in-law Joan Perry of New Bedford, four loving grand children: Jillian Jackson Krieger of Rhode Island, Jacob Colin Jackson of California, Jaime Jackson and Jeremy Jackson of Fairhaven, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was the father to the late Eric Jackson, the brother to the late Ann Jackson, the brother to the late John Jackson, and the brother-in-law to the late Fred Freitas.
Colin will be cremated and a celebration of his life and the life of his late wife Peggy Jackson will be held on Saturday, June 18th at 10 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery as they will finally be together again. All family and friends are invited to attend to pay their respects to both Colin & Peggy. Immediately following the service, the family is having a gathering at the Bayside Lounge, Fairhaven. Arrangements are by the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven. For memorial register go to, www.hathawayfunerals.com.
