Initially, at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, 9/18, Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector Southeastern New England received a report that 54-year-old Linda Carman and her 22-year-old son Nathan Carman failed to return from an offshore fishing trip.
They departed Ram’s Point Marina in Point Judith, Rhode Island Saturday evening in the Chicken Pox, a 31-foot center console boat.
The Coast Guard searched over 62,000 square nautical miles, an area larger than the state of Georgia, from south of Block Island, Rhode Island to the Canyons off New York.
Search assets included: Coast Guard Cutter Bonito, homeported in NEW YORK; Coast Guard Cutter Campbell, homeported in Kittery, Maine; A MH-60 Jayhawk from Air Station Cape Cod; A HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft from Air Station Cape Cod; A C-130 from Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina
On Sunday, 9/25, Nathan Carman was found in a life raft by the freighter Orient Lucky and brought back to Boston on Tuesday.
A Coast Guard crew picked up Nathan from the freighter in a 45-foot medium response boat and brought him back to Base Boston, where he was reunited with his family.
Anyone with information about the missing vessel Chicken Pox is urged to call Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England’s Command Center at 508-457-3211.
In audio on the USCG website, Mr. Carmen said that he heard a “funny noise” coming from the engine compartment, and saw a lot of water.
He said he brought the safety equipment forward and the boat “dropped out” from under his feet. He said he saw the life raft, but did not see his mother. He said he called for her, but could not find her.
He said the incident happened around midday Sunday, 9/18.
