Dear Frankie

April 6, 2022 by Staff Writer

All For One

Dear Frankie,

My youngest siblings are four-year-old twins. They both have great dispositions. Sometimes my mom only gives them one toy to play with. She does this, she says, to teach them how to share.

Most of the time, the twins enjoy sharing a toy. However, occasionally, one of them gets mad and accuses the other of not waiting their turn, grabbing, or refusing to give up the toy when asked. When this happens, one or the other inevitably starts to cry and have a tantrum. When this happens, my mom sits them down and gives them the lecture we have all heard a million times on the merits of sharing.

So, I ask you, if my mom thinks sharing is so important, why doesn’t she let my big brother drive her car or my sister wear her jewelry? If sharing is so great, why doesn’t she share?

Benjie

Dear Benjie,

Sometimes it isn’t easy to understand why humans act the way they do. Could your mom be one of those “Do what I say and not what I do” people?

Maybe sharing is just for kids, and you don’t have to share after you become an adult. It might also be a money thing. You should share inexpensive items, but not expensive things. I honestly don’t have a clue.

Your question, however, did make me wonder what it would be like if every human did share? For starters, there would be no rich people or poor people. Can you imagine living in such a world?

Best, Frankie
