From the Editor 3/3/22

Well, looks like we have a new Town Administrator in Fairhaven (see page 3). She’ll be starting in about a month. Now, let’s all be nice-nice for…say…oh, at least five minutes till she gets her feet wet, okay?

Seriously, though, lets welcome Angelina “Angie” Lopes Ellison to Fairhaven and wish her luck.

Now, during  that meeting Mr. Espindola said that one of the candidates dropped out after hearing from someone in town hall that we were only interested in hiring a woman. Really, guy. If you’re going to take town hall scuttlebutt as gospel, maybe you need to be looking for a different kind of job. Geesh.

There’s other local stuff, of course, including our cover about three new police officers, if you include K9 Blue, and they do.

But, I want to take a few lines to express my heartbreak and horror at what is happening in Ukraine. God bless ’em, the Ukrainians are showing the world how it’s done. They don’t stand a snowball’s chance, but there they are, staring down Goliath. They are acting out, in horrifying terms, the motto “Live free or die.” They are choosing to fight, against a brutal, autocratic madman. The alternative, of course, is to live under the thumb of that madman.

Ordinary citizens, grandmothers and teenagers, are throwing molotov cocktails at Russian tanks, shooting rifles and blockading streets.

The rest of the world, with the notable exception of China, has united against Russia.

Ukrainian president Volodmyr Zelensky, a comedian by trade before becoming president, has proven to be an inspirational leader. He is hunkered down in his country, in the capital, refusing transport out of the country by the US, saying, “The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride.”

One Ukrainian woman told Russian soldiers to get the f out of her country. She offered them sunflower seeds to put in their pockets so when they died there on Ukrainian soil, at least sunflowers will grow. The sunflower is the national flower of Urkraine.

I want a sunflower shirt.

“Glory to Ukraine,” as Mr. Zelensky said. “Glory to Ukraine.”

Until next week then,
