Doggie Day Care
Dear Frankie
I see my friend Lily at the park only on weekends. Monday through Friday, she goes to doggie daycare.
I asked her if she liked going, and she said, “Are you kidding? It’s like winning the canine lottery.”
She said, “Who wouldn’t like having a warm homemade breakfast, gymnastics, free play, nap time (with a soft blanket on a cushioned cot), lunch (also homemade), games, and a delicious snack before getting on the bus to go home.
When I asked my mother why I wasn’t going to daycare, she said, “I’ll tell you why, it’s expensive, and you have a mother who stays at home and provides you twenty-four hours of doggie daycare, plus a daily trip to the dog park, where I patiently wait for you to see your friends and get some exercise.”
I don’t understand why she got so riled up. I just asked a simple question. Anyway, If I could get her to agree to send me, do you know of any scholarships for dogs who would give their right paw to attend?
Riley
Dear Riley,
Tuition aside, I’m not sure what you could say to convince your mom to send you to doggie daycare. Your question made her feel that you didn’t appreciate all she did to take care of you. She was probably insulted that you thought that going to a daycare staffed by people who were paid to care for dogs in a group setting was better than the companionship, meals, treats, and daily dog park outing she provides.
As for your question about scholarships, I am not aware of any. If there were, I think your chances of getting one would be slim, seeing that you have a caring stay-at-home mom.
Are you aware, Riley, that many working parents leave their dogs at home alone when they go to work? Some dogs are also left in a crate whenever their parents are out of the house.
Don’t get me started on crates.
I suggest you count the many blessings your mom provides. You might also think about getting down on your knees and offering her some words of thanks.
Best, Frankie
