The state has issued a mandatory outdoor water usage ban that will most likely go into effect on Friday or Monday, according to Fairhaven public works superintendent Vinnie Furtado. The new restrictions came down on Wednesday, and by press time, the final word had not been issued.
Mr. Furtado said, however, that he expected the ban to become official in a day or two.
The restrictions ban all outdoor water use except for food production, maintenance of livestock, and some health and business reasons.
Nonessential outdoor water use includes irrigation of lawns with a sprinkler or automatic irrigation system; washing of vehicles except for safety reasons or business equipment; washing of exterior building surfaces, parking lots, etc.
Exceptions include gardens, flowers and ornamental plants, by means of hand-held hose, and only from –8 a.m., and 6–8 p.m.
Anyone who has replanted or reseeded vegetation in a yard is encouraged to contact the Board of Public Works at 508-979-4030 for review and approval.
Residents who are currently on a private well are encouraged to participate in the current restrictions due to the drought situation across the State.
