Close Ash Street Jail. The Ash Street Jail was built in the 19th century and holds people in inhumane conditions. People report rats, vermin, mold, and plumbing backups that release bathroom waste into cells. Make this the last holiday season that people must endure under these terrible conditions.
Meet us at 558 Pleasant St. at Noon. From there, we will march together from downtown New Bedford to the Ash Street Jail. At the corner of Ash and Union Streets we will have a chorus to sing songs from outside the prison and advocates to speak about why the jail should be shut down.
