Dear Frankie

December 8, 2021 by Staff Writer

Scary Noises

Dear Frankie,

Loud noises terrify me.

Whenever there is a storm my mom immediately dresses me in my ThunderShirt and lets me go into her big closet.

However, whenever she burns something on the stove and the smoke alarms go off, she forgets all about me. At the first beep, she starts swinging a dish towel, cursing and opening the windows and doors.

Why doesn’t she realize the smoke alarm stresses me out as much as a storm?

Buddy

Dear Buddy,

It does make you wonder. Noise is noise.

My only explanation is that storms don’t scare your mom, so she can focus on your needs. Whereas a kitchen filled with smoke, caused by her, and a screeching fire alarm is scary and can cause someone to panic.

When this happens she’s not thinking about anything except getting the smoke out of the house and stopping the alarm.

I’m sure after the fact when she stops kicking herself for not tending to the stove, she feels terrible that she didn’t come to your rescue.

There are times when you have to rely on yourself to get out of harm’s way. All I can suggest is you get as far away from the sound as possible, put your paws over your ears, and wait until she gets things under control.

Best, Frankie
