Okay, so…technically, this is the 11/11 issue. So, that means it’s too late to tell you about the Veterans Day parade on the same date at 9 a.m. right? Well, not really. Some of you will get this baby a day early, so I’m reminding you. Details were in last week’s issue: Parade steps off from Benoit Square at 9 a.m., and proceeds along Main Street to the high school. Be there to support our veterans and to see the big flag get raised. That’s cool stuff.
We’re going to have a five-member Select Board (woo hoo!!!). See page 4 for the SB story on the details. The legislation was signed by the governor, and…we’re good to go. Hopefully, this will help spread out some of the work/committee assignments of each member. But, more importantly, maybe it will help avoid the kind of nutcase-crazy baloney we had to put up with last year. One person should not be able to gunk up the works that much. Here’s to the future!
Our cover story is something that has been brewing for a while now. We’ve covered some of it off and on as meetings have happened. But, the PJ Keating Company is really….um…ticking off? The neighbors (see page 12). The town of Acushnet and the neighbors are putting up with a lot of dust, noise, and odor. This is what happens when town meeting members don’t pay attention to what they are voting for. A bylaw change from a few years ago made this use change possible. It has made life miserable for neighbors.
People need to be involved in their local politics and the doings of boards and committees. I was surprised when it passed, even though some people spoke against it. Acushnet is an open Town Meeting, so hundreds of people could have voted on it. Unfortunately, they struggle to get a quorum of 75. And, well, this is what happens.
