Letter_Comm on Disability needs members

Commission on Disability Looking for Members

Hello. My name is Marcus Ferro, I am one of your five elected Commissioners on the Board of Public Works. But I’m writing to you today as a sibling of an individual living with autism and as the Chairperson of Fairhaven’s Commission on Disability.

Commissions on Disability are established in participating municipalities across the Commonwealth by town or city council vote. CoD’s advocate for policies and projects that make municipalities more accessible for residents living with disabilities. As a sibling of an individual living with autism, the work of ensuring our town’s accessibility is a cause very close to me, and I am fortunate to chair a commission that is composed of passionate and dedicated residents.

Our last meeting covered a broad list of topics and projects we are working on regarding town accessibility, including but not limited to: expanded handicap parking at town-sponsored events, purchasing accessibility mats for the town beach, helping to provide access to resources for parents who are advocating for a child with special education needs, organizing a coalition of volunteers to shovel bus stops during and after snowy weather, and re-establishing a working committee to decide on how to make the Tax Collector’s office more accessible at Town Hall.

Unfortunately however, our membership is waning. We are in need of a more robust membership that features town residents from all aspects of the community. So if you are a Fairhaven resident living with a disability, a loved one of an individual with a disability, or just want to engage in the gratifying and necessary work of advocating for members of the disability community in Town, then I urge you to consider sending a letter to the Selectboard expressing your intention to be appointed to the Town’s Commission on Disability.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me at marcusferrolaw@gmail.com. Thank you and enjoy your holiday season.

Marcus Ferro, Chairperson, Fairhaven Commission on Disability
