John Rogers, Jr.
John Rogers, Jr., 83, of Fairhaven passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. He was the loving husband of 55 years to Margaret (Wood) Rogers.
Born in New Bedford, son of the late John Rogers, Sr. and M. Evelyn (Nelson) Rogers, he was a lifelong resident of Fairhaven. John graduated from Fairhaven High School and Bryant College.
John had a special talent for making friends wherever he went. Whether it was delivering milk with his father and uncles for the family business, Rogers Dairy, working at the National Bank of Fairhaven, which he did for 23 years, or in his second career as a Real Estate Appraiser for his business Anchor Appraisals, he never met a person he didn’t like. His devotion to the Town of Fairhaven was endless. He spent time on the School Committee, as Town Collector, was a longtime Call Firefighter and longtime member and supporter of the Fairhaven Emergency Management Agency. His passion for fire service was demonstrated in his commitment to the Fairhaven Protecting Society and the town’s antique fire trucks. He was a member and chair of the Fire Apparatus Committee. He acted as an unofficial broker of fire trucks, repurposing trucks from larger communities that were going out of service to small communities throughout northern New England, helping many small communities. This included Orford, NH, a community he loved where he had a second home, and leaves many friends.
John was a longtime member of First Congregational Church of Fairhaven, serving on many committees and singing in the choir. He was a member and past master of the Geo. H. Taber Lodge AF & AM. He served on the board and as treasurer of the Riverside Cemetery. He was in the Kiwanis Club that was responsible for the helipad at St. Luke’s Hospital, he was a member of Fairhaven Music Parents, AFS Host parent and was the number one supporter of his children’s and grandchildren’s many activities and sports teams. He was the second dad and grandpa to his children’s and grandchildren’s friends and was devoted to the care of his family, especially his wife Peggy.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Pamela R. Kuechler and her husband Doug of Fairhaven and Martha E. Rogers of Quincy; two grandchildren, Alexander K. Kuechler and Alison M. Kuechler of Fairhaven; and several nieces and nephews, and several cousins. John was the brother of the late Ellen N. Rogers.
In accordance with his wishes John will be cremated and memorial calling hours will be Friday, 9/24/21, from 4-7 p.m. in the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven. His funeral service will be held Saturday, September 25, 2021 at 9 a.m. in the First Congregational Church of Fairhaven followed by interment with a Masonic Service by the George H. Taber Lodge AF & AM in Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fairhaven Protecting Society, supporting his beloved antique fire trucks, or the First Congregational Church of Fairhaven.
