Not a Done Deal – Yet
Voting Mr. Freitas out of office on July 26 will clear a path for one of the three worthy candidates and return civility and reason to Fairhaven government.
I do not know the candidates personally, but I have heard good things about them all. So, I listened intently during the “Meet the Candidates” livestreamed on FairhavenTV.com and did a close read of their published statements. They all correctly listed the issues/ problems Fairhaven faces and conveyed all the right sentiments and wish lists — who could disagree?
But Cam Durant went beyond the identification of the problems and gave clear-eyed insights about “HOW” he would approach the challenges and HOW he has successfully handled similar issues during his career. In doing so he demonstrated his expertise — not simply by saying “I have expertise” — but by showing HOW that expertise was (and will be) deployed to approach and solve problems.
Likewise, all have impressive educational credentials and backgrounds, but I was looking for not simply that they had acquired the requisite knowledge but HOW they would put that knowledge into action.
What impressed me most about Mr. Durant was that he was direct and detailed in his concrete examples regarding Fairhaven’s priorities. In every instance he offered a more in-depth perspective. All his answers were deeply thoughtful — not simply “we need this or that” — but well-reasoned and circumspect as to the challenges at hand and the immediacy needed to course correct.
He made a compelling case — ably connecting his skill set to what is needed most in Fairhaven.
Moreover, I think it is imperative that Mr. Espindola become the Chair of the Selectboard going forward. Every positive initiative he brought before the board was intentionally blocked to the detriment of Fairhaven. Fairhaven would be in a decidedly better position had Mr. Espindola been chair as tradition dictated. Despite all the insults, put-downs, and abuse that Mr. Freitas hurled — Mr. Espindola was steadfast and determined in advocating good government practices. His dedication and leadership have been truly stellar, and Fairhaven is indeed fortunate and honored by his endurance and example.
Likewise, the candidates have the best interests of Fairhaven at heart, and they will be worthy contenders as Fairhaven moves forward. But for this election I am voting for Mr. Durant because he has demonstrated a depth-of-understanding on the issues. He clearly has the management skills, dedication, and passion to help implement the change Fairhaven needs NOW.
The Recall of Mr. Freitas is not a done deal until this Special Election removes him. For the sake of Fairhaven, and the civility we hold dear, please make your presence felt by voting on July 26.
