To kick off Pride Month this year, The South Coast LGBTQ+ Network has partnered with the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center to launch the center’s new Cinema New Bedford series with Beyond the Binary, a series of films which its curator Mocha James Herrup calls “a playful, joyous, and sometimes genre-defying series of films from the gender frontier.” The event marks the official re-opening of the iconic theater, which has been closed to the public since last year due to the pandemic.
A red carpet event on June 1 at 6:30 p.m. will precede the premiere of the first film in the series at 7:00 p.m. A new film will follow every Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. throughout the month of June. Tickets are available at https://zeiterion.org/cinema-new-bedford/.
• June 8 TCHINDAS, a beautifully shot verité chronicle of the all-consuming Carnival preparations by the transgender community on São Vicente, Cape Verde’s second-most-populous island. Featuring a pre-recorded Q&A with Tchinda, star of the film.
• June 15 NO ORDINARY MAN, an innovative documentary that uses fiction and non-fiction storytelling to explore the life of the legendary transgender jazz musician, Billy Tipton, and his continued legacy today. Featuring Q&A with writer Amos Mac and cast member Marquise Vilsón.
