The day was perfect for outdoor activities on Saturday as the Huttleston Marketplace in Fairhaven opened for the season, with lots of sun, warm, not too hot, and a bit of a breeze to keep things comfortable. And it seemed that everyone was definitely ready to enjoy a “normal” seasonal event. Masks were still required, and most people complied. But, this week, masks will be optional, as the Governor’s new guidelines do not require masks as of 5/29. The booths are still spaced seven feet apart, but that still means there’s room for 68 vendors.
Items for sale include hand made arts and crafts, quality antiques and vintage collectibles, upcycled items, fresh farm produce, and locally prepared foods.
On Saturday, vendors said they were very pleased with the turnout and the crowd
“It was amazing,” said Doug Bingham, describing a two to three hour stretch when the sun came out and the place was packed on Saturday.
He and his wife Barbara, of B&B Originals sell hand made fabric items, like tote bags and pouches, and wood crafts, such as decorative items and walking sticks. They have been at the marketplace for four seasons.
“We love being part of it,” said Mr. Bingham, adding they have met some “interesting folks,” including people from the neighborhood.
He said they see the same faces, but also new faces every year.
Oh, and they make sales, too.
Kari Miller of Choose Happiness, which sells t-shirts, hats, and sweatshirts, said it was
“fantastic.”
She said the crowd was steady all day, with people from all over, not just locals.
“Everybody’s happy they’re outside,” said Ms. Miller, adding that there seemed to be more people than in past years. This is her fourth season.
Chris Richard, the Fairhaven Office of Tourism Director, who organizes the event, said it was a “good opening day.”
“Just the fact that there was an opening day,” he said.
The Marketplace takes place rain or shine every Saturday through September 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., on th Fairhaven Visitors Center Lawn/ Fairhaven High School Lawn, 141 Main Street, at Route 6, Fairhaven
