Press Release

Despite enduring statewide restrictions surrounding COVID-19, Fairhaven High School drama club students developed and now prepare to release a virtual performance, Ghost Light Theater.

Senior Charlie Fernandes performs Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812’s “Dust and Ashes” during Ghost Light Theater.

In March of 2020, COVID-19 canceled Fairhaven’s performance of Little Shop of Horrors and shuttered the drama company’s endeavors indefinitely. Once the Commonwealth’s infection rates decreased, Massachusetts began reducing restrictions on performance companies across the state. The Ghost Light Theater was born.

During difficult times, theaters symbolically displayed a ghost light in the dark theater. The ghost light fills the theater with hope, and reminds people good times will prevail. In Fairhaven, 23 students became the ghost light, keeping the Fairhaven Drama club alive during the Pandemic.

Students collaborated virtually on Google Meets developing a plan to create a performance that inspires hope and offers respite from the chaos created by the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Their efforts have created 14 musical and monologue performances including performances from 2020’s canceled Little Shop of Horrors.

Students have also produced three original radio dramas, and one student-produced movie trailer.

Students teamed up with Fairhaven’s music teachers Jeremy Young, Bryan Young, and media arts teacher Drew Furtado to bring these virtual ideas into a tangible space for the general public and school community. The group adjusted to new state guidelines, and used technology to record socially distant performances.

Ghost Light Theater releases on Fairhaven’s Educational Access Channel 9 on Friday, May 28, at 7:00 pm. Find the link at https://www.fhsart.net. You may also view the performance on the Drama Club’s website at  https://connect.xfinity.com/appsuite/(https:/sites.google.com/fairhavenps.net/fhs-drama-club (NOTE: The website will not be live until 5/28)
