A Poet in Stone: Edmonia Lewis
(1844-1905). Edmonia Lewis was born free in Upstate New York. She worked for most of her career in Rome, Italy and was the first African American sculptor to achieve international prominence. She began to gain prominence in the United States during the Civil War, incorporating themes relating to Black and indigenous peoples into Neoclassical-style sculpture, and remained the only Black woman artist who had participated in and been recognized to any extent by the American artistic mainstream.

Althea Gibson
(1927-2003) Althea Neale Gibson was an American tennis player and professional golfer, and one of the first Black athletes to cross the color-line of international tennis.
