It’s somewhat of a double miracle that I’m getting this weekly miracle done these days. Between the Olympics and the election shenanigans, I am seriously playing hooky a lot lately. Throw in this crazy-hot weather and it just simply being August, and…well, suffice it to say I amaze me sometimes.
And, of course, the Olympics are a sporting event involving women, so there are unlimited opportunities to rail against the sexist crap that goes on.
First and foremost, a complaint I make every four years: Why do the female gymnasts and beach volleyball athletes have to wear those stupid uniforms? The men do not wear skinny little, up-your-@$$ clothes. They wear long pants on the beam, instead of needing that gawd-awful powdery stuff on their legs as the women do. They wear shorts, not some stupid thing that threatens to disappear up their you-know-whatses.
As for the Beach Volleyball? Hell, you know the only reason it ever got included in the first place was to force women to compete half-naked. The men don’t.
It’s also the only sport where you get pictures of the women when you put in a search for the men. It even says MEN, and there is a picture of women.
Go figure.
Which brings me to the next point.
There’s an article (http://www.vogue.com/13466818/ sexist-moments-olympics-coverage/) listing a bunch of sexist coverage from these games. Really, it should be required reading for everyone.
Andy Murray won his second gold medal and the reporter said he was great for being the first. Of course the Williams sisters had already done that.
But, hey, they’re women, right?
Hungarian swimmer Katinka Hosszu won gold and the cameras immediately went to her husband and said he was the one responsible, although he clearly was not in the pool with her. Imagine doing that to Michael Phelps! Eeee…..would never happen.
But the best…er, worst, I think (so far) is this headline. Katie Ledecky broke a world record and won GOLD. Phelps got silver in a three-way tie….yes a tie.
Guess who got the bigger headline?
As my friend Pam would say: “We’re doomed…. doomed I tell you, doomed.”
