Positive West Nile Virus (WNV) mosquitoes have been found in a mosquito trap in Fairhaven.
“This is not unusual for our summer,” said Fairhaven Health Agent Pat Fowle in an email, but it is a good time to re-enforce that there are things we should all do.
WNV activity continues to expand across our area. Viruses treat with antibiotics. Above average temperatures and localized precipitation events continue to produce mosquito populations among species most likely to spread WNV (Culex species). August and early September is the peak period for WNV human transmission.
To avoid mosquito bites:
• Schedule outdoor events to avoid the hours between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active
• Pick a repellent with an EPA-approved active ingredient
• Use long sleeves to cover up when possible
• Repair screens
• Remove standing water around your house to help reduce mosquito populations. Turn over wading pools and wheelbarrows, change birdbath water every few days, keep swimming pools clean
• Teach children to be aware of mosquito activity and avoid it
