Halloween is Saturday, 10/31

Welcome to our 15th annual Halloween Trail. 

It’s a different year to be sure. I’m sad to say that there are no elaborate walk-through haunts this year due to the COVID-19 risk. But, we still have our regulars, and I think a new one or two. The Halloween Horribles Parade in Fairhaven and the Halloween Parade in Acushnet have both been canceled for this year. But, I’m confident that everything will be back next year.

Meanwhile, visit these places. Most are view-from-the-street/sidewalk, or as you walk up to the house. 

Most of these home haunters are going to offer candy and will do their best to be COVID safe. At my place, for instance, I will be using the ladle to give out the candy. In the past, I had the trick-or-treaters scoop out their own witch’s brew. I will also leave it outside, instead of just inside the doorway.

They will still have to walk along the walkway, though, past the tree spirits and the graveyard to get to my yearly witch’s brew. 

Other places have said they will leave the candy out and let trick-or-treaters grab their own.

So, don’t be shy, there’s still lots of haunting to do, even in a pandemic!

Be sure to wear your COVID masks under your Halloween masks. Take lots of hand sanitizer with you and don’t be shy about using it, okay?

No doubt there are other haunted houses that will welcome you on Halloween, but we only include the ones we know for sure want to be included on the trail. If you see decorations, it’s a good bet they have candy and will welcome you and your little ones so they can scare the be­jeebers out of you. So, don’t be shy. If you see a lot of decora­tions, you know they that at the very least they want you to stop and gawk, so feel free to do so.

As always, we tried to make this a logical geographical trail. We begin in North Fairhaven and move south from there, but, of course, this is America, land of the free and home of the car lovers, so feel free to visit any which way you want to. Just…get there! Thanks to all who sent in yards and helped out with pictures.

Enjoy your tour of the real Halloween­town….. yahahahahahaha.

Oh…and Halloween is on a Saturday this year, and that night is also Daylight Saving Time.

Tips from the Health Department

The Fairhaven Health Department has also issued some guidelines for staying safe during trick-or-treating. 

Tips include: Enjoy Halloween activities outside rather than indoors; place grab and go bagged treats outside on the porch or front steps; consider leaving hand sanitizers; wear a mask; maintain six feet of physical distance from people not in the same household. 

Do NOT participate in large gatherings; do not hand out treats if you feel sick, have tested positive for COVID-19, or have been exposed to someone with the virus, or if you are self-isolating after travel.

Limit group sizes to 10 people.

And So It Begins…

1: 70 Oliver Street  Back for the sixth year and ready this weekend for your view­ing pleasure (“pleasure” being a relative term, of course). They are up and ready now, so feel free to go by anytime to look, but especially be prepared to be scared on Friday and Satur­day this weekend and next from around 6–9. 

They will hold a bake sale again to raise money for Boston Children’s Hospital. Please wear your masks.

2: 60 Oxford Street Ole Oxford Haunt, our own Manny Souza and family are not letting COVID stop them from displaying their handiwork. No screaming ghouls (we think?), and no walk-through (alas), but the front yard is spectacular. And you can check it out from the sidewalk, the street, or even stay in your car if you’re too scared to get out.

Now, the Ole Oxford tends to have a big following, so don’t be surprised if you see lots of people there. Keep your masks on and try to stay apart, okay? Sub­mit­ted photos.

3: 127 Laurel Street. Head to the center of town, where we KNOW there are other places that are spooky. It’s a veritable Little Salem out there on Halloween night, with all kinds of  ghouls and goblins running around. This year, a couple of those places are not decorating so as not to contribute to the possibility of COVID spread. But there are still quite a few. Just keep your distance from each other. Be sure to go by on Halloween night to see special things that are only put out then. They are decorated already, but be sure to go at night because the lights are spine tingling. Submitted photos.

4: 88 Chestnut Street. We don’t have a picture of this one. We’re not even sure if it’s spooky or not. But we DO know that they have “all the goods” so run on by and grab a treat.

5: 66 Pleasant Street We know these guys have decorations, and they have assured us that there are many others on Pleasant Street already. So take your time, ride up and down all three of these streets in the center of town.They’re hoping to have treats for the masses, but they’ll be doing it in a COVID responsible way, so look around….um…ah…if you can get past THIS guy. 6: Fairhaven Center. Oh, and don’t forget Green Street, too. That corner by the UU church is bound to be populated by creatures you’ve never encountered before.

Now pop up Washington St. and head to Sconticut Neck Road to go to West Island. We have it on great authority that there are more than a few yards on the way that will also welcome you, so pay attention.

7: 161 Dog­wood Street After the cause­way, hang a left onto Dog­wood to 161 which is just a couple of houses away from my place. My neighbors have once again made good use of their space in front of the house. I have NOOOO idea what’s in store over there for the big night, so be prepared. They seem pretty darned enthusiastic, so, nothing would surprise me. Beth David photo.

8: 166 Dog­wood St. Scoot up the street a few hundred feet to my place on the left. Hopefully, I’ll be up and running for the Big Night, but not before, I’m afraid. We can promise dead things, creepy noises, and a caul­dron full of boiling witch’s brew. Beth David photo.

9: 19 Weeden Road After you leave West Island, head east on Route 6 until you find Weeden Road. Take a right and find 19. We only have this one picture of he place, but…ooooh….it’s pretty creepy and it looks like it’s just a tease. They’ll have treats for the tricksters, I’m told…if you can get by these guys. Acushnet

We have three Acushnet stops this year and they are GREAT ones. Wow. But we’re sure there are more places to be scaried by our northern neighbors.

10: 8 Beech Street. Start out just over the town line from South Main, left on Lawson to Beech Street. You can’t miss it (although you might WANT to). This elaborate yard goes on forever and is best seen at night. You’ll want to visit it more than once because they add new stuff all the time. 11: 18 Village Avenue. Now head own So. Main and take a right onto Main to Village Ave. Brrrr…a shiver just ran through me. These guys clearly have the obsession. Take your garlic, wooden stake, salt, and…whatever with you. You’ll need it. Submitted photo.

Boo at Zoo (not free)

SLIGHTLY SPOOKY FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY Now in its 19th year – Boo at the Zoo returns, with extra precautions, during the daytime to satisfy all your fall, Halloween and cool weather cravings. Want to show off your little ghosts and goblins? Baby Boo is for you! Baby Boo is geared towards children 5 and under, 5but any age is welcome!

Boo at the Zoo runs from 10:00am to 6:00pm on October 17, 18, 24, 25 and 31. Baby Boo runs from 9:00am to 2:00pm on October 23 and 30.

Dress the kids in their favorite costume and come explore all that BPZOO has to offer! We’ll provide families with a socially-distanced walk through experience with some twists and turns along the way. Our slightly spooky theme will include mazes, a scavenger hunt, plenty of trick-or-treat stations, endless photo opportunities including a photo costume contest, Halloween themed animal enrichment, and up-close meet and greets with the Zoo’s Animal Ambassadors. Families are encouraged to bring their own “trick or treat” bags. All proceeds from Boo at the Zoo support the Zoo’s education and family programs.
