Dear Frankie

November 9, 2022 by Staff Writer

Left Out to Dry

Dear Frankie,

Muffin is my best friend at doggie daycare. Last year her family moved into my neighborhood. As soon as she settled in, I introduced her to my best neighborhood friend, Willow. I was delighted to see the two of them hit it off.

Whenever my mom gave me the go-ahead to invite friends for a play date, I always asked the two of them. Sometimes one or the other couldn’t come, so it would only be the two of us.

Several months ago, my mom mentioned during dinner that she had seen Willow and Muffin on several occasions having lunch at the mall. She asked me why I hadn’t joined them.

I said they never mentioned anything about going to the mall. Then my brother piped up and said I know you don’t like sports, so I never thought anything about it when I saw them sitting together in the bleachers at football practice week after week.

Frankie, I don’t understand why they didn’t invite me or tell me they were getting together. Whenever the three or the two of us get together, we always have a good time. Any thoughts on what I should do?

Sadie

Dear Sadie,

Talk about being duped. If Willow and Muffin met up occasionally, I wouldn’t give it much thought. But meeting weekly for lunch and at football practice and not inviting you along is worthy of note.

There doesn’t seem to be any nice way around it: they chose to exclude you.

Now here’s a question for you:  Do you think this is how a best friend behaves? If you are being honest, you know it isn’t.

If you enjoy your time with them, continue to do so. But remember whom you are dealing with.

I would suggest that you cast your social net a little wider and find friends that don’t have secret agendas.

Best, Frankie
