Donald B. Mendell
Donald B. Mendell, 93, of Fairhaven, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2020 at home. He was the husband of the late Pauline E. (Lewis) Mendell.
Born in New Bedford, son of the late Reginald and Elizabeth (Thomas) Mendell, he had resided in New Bedford before moving to Fairhaven where he lived for many years. He was a graduate of New Bedford High School, attended Brown University on a music scholarship and received a degree in Pharmacy from New England School of Pharmacy in 1943.
Mr. Mendell was a well-known and respected pharmacist who owned Guy’s Pharmacy in Fairhaven. He also owned the consignment shop “Stuff”.
Don was a longtime member of the Fairhaven Rotary Club and recipient of the Paul Harris award. He was very active at the Fairhaven Senior Center where he played Santa Clause as well as for the town’s holiday festivities. He had a love of music and played the trumpet. He enjoyed fishing and boating with his son. Don loved spending time with his family whom he adored.
He is survived by a daughter, Valerie A. Mendell of Fairhaven; two sons, Donald B. Mendell, Jr. and his wife Susan of Palmyra, Maine, and Robert L. Mendell and his wife Rita of Fairhaven; 11 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren and 1 on the way; a son-in-law, Daniel Pallatroni of Rochester; a brother-in-law, Ed Lewis and his wife Jan of Farmington, Maine; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Joyce Pallatroni; two sisters, Dr. Eleanor Worsley and Phyllis Wood; and two great grandchildren, Jarryd Leeks and Imani Mattos.
Private services are in the care of Waring-Sullivan Home at Fairlawn, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven. Donations in Don’s memory may be made to Smiles Foundation, 2727 Steeles Ave. West, Suite 301, Toronto, Ontario M3J 3G9.
